Silent_Witness: @Faptacular: Aside from the fact that they've never met (and that includes any backstory- if it isn't shown onscreen, it never happened), I have a couple reasons why I'm ambivalent to this pairing.
The first is distance. Both times Octavia's appeared, it's been in Canterlot, so it's not unreasonable to assume that she lives there. Vinyl on the other hand has appeared in both Ponyville and Canterlot, but since she was on-hand to provide music for Rarity's fashion show in Suited For Success, it's likely that she lives in Ponyville. So there's a fairly significant geographic barrier separating them.
The second comes down to personality. We've seen how the ponies in Canterlot act, and assuming that Octavia is from Canterlot, she's most likely the same way. Add to the fact that she's most likely had formal music lessons, I don't think she would be too fond of a lowly (most likely self-taught) DJ. In fact, she'd probably want to put as much distance between that "trash" as possible. I won't go so far as to say the hate is mutual, though I could imagine that Vinyl wouldn't exactly take to kindly to being looked down on by a stuck-up Canterlot pony.
Anyway, that's my take on the whole deal.
Anonymous1: @Silent_Witness: It was never supposed to be a long-term relationship pairing. It started as a rule 34 / clopfic contrivance, because it's hot to imagine Vinyl bringing out Octavia's wild side and seducing her.
Anonymous2: Vinyl was in Ponyville because she came with Hoity Toity.
Maybe I'd rather prefer Tavi shipped with Lyra but she is already shipped with BonBon by the series makers themselves. The fact that Tavi gets along with someone like Vinyl just shows how much tolerance and kindness she has despite being a well mannered elite of high society, she may have accustomed to the Unicorn's ways of living but she is an Earth pony at heart after all.
The opposite is for Vinyl, who might have been an orphan or brought up in a poor family despite being a unicorn, which helps her break the class stereotypes as well.
And this is why I think these two are a decent ship. The fact that they're so different from the rest of their crowds is what makes them alike. If it wasn't for this ship I'd never care about Vinyl.
Silent_Witness: @Gomenasai: We can only provide conjecture when it comes to their personalities, since neither character has had a speaking role (yet), but as I said, I don't imagine Octavia would be especially receptive of Vinyl Scratch. I imagine that Octavia worked very hard over many years to learn her craft, and wouldn't be appreciative of some upstart "musician" butting into her field with "electronic trash." (Just look at some people's reaction to the likes of Skrillex or Deadmau5 and you'll understand exactly what I mean.)
And of course, that's assuming that Vinyl is a musician at all. There's no evidence confirming that she's anything more than just a DJ (but of course, there's no evidence denying that either).

Opposites Attract angle.
What's not to understand?
Ya know, other than the fact that they've never fucking met.
