More specifically it started off as a gender-neutral term simply for adult fans of the show. Like any fandom split off from there into other niches.
Eventually someone decided a feminized term was neccasary and we got Pegusisters. Of course that doesn't roll off the tonuge as easily and I haven't seen it used as much.
Danielakiiki: @Anonymous: Originally bronies were /b/ronies (to differentiate themselves from /co/ts). Non-4chan fans of the shows took bronies to mean bro-ponies.
