shinazuka: @Anonymous: It's a riff on those last names that use prefixes to denote place of origin- Leonardo DA Vinci, Vincent VAN Gogh, etc. "van Der Zee" roughly translates from Dutch into "from the Sea." Cause she's a mermaid. More clever than Gillman at least(though doesn't sound as good).
