TheObscureOne: Showing my boy Kung Lao some love. He and Jade became a couple in my canon just like Liu Kang with Kitana. Not a fan of pairing Jade with Kotal due to how random it is and the fact that Kotal got washed, rinsed, and put out to dry which raised a question: how would he protect Jade if he even couldn't protect himself?
Anonymous1: The thing is if your lady is a fighter like Jade, Kitana or Sonya, they’re kind of capable and don’t really need much protecting. Still I didn’t really care for the ship either. Because up until that point Jade was all about her friend and realm. Seeing her all of a sudden go lovey dovey for some dude that ain’t even that good or admirable felt weird. I mean not even Kitana or Sonya were this gushy about their guys and their respective relationships have been floating around for years. I think whoever was writing this stuff just really liked ships and felt like Jade needed more to do maybe.
TheObscureOne: @Anonymous: But still given how terrible Kotal's personality and track records are (comic version doesn't count) i just don't get how Jade even liked him in the first place. Yeah sure she doesn't really need much protection if the enemies are jobbers like Baraka, Reptile, or Black Dragon mercenaries but if her man is weaker than her and just being useless most of the time he would just be a burden/dead weight to her especially if there's a bigger threat. His humiliation by Kung Jin, Jacqui, and D'Vorah not to mention how he was treated like a damsel in distress in MK11 in which he almost died 4 times hurt his character even more. Even if the writers actually tried to give Jade something more to do they completely forgot one of the most important aspect of her character: being a close friend and bodyguard to Kitana given how it was barely mentioned nor showed in the story mode and Jade spent most of her screen times with Kotal
Anonymous2(1): @TheObscureOne: I do find it odd that characters who see themselves like sisters and have been friends for millennia don’t go on a mission together and share a chapter but Liu and Lao or Sub and Scorp do.
I also don’t disagree with you on your talking points against Kotal and I don’t really care much for him either. But to be fair to him, loads of characters kind of get the shaft in terms of performance or characterization. Like having two Kabals and both of them being bad and not coming out on top in a single fight. What they did to Sindel. Boss characters, gods or fighters who ought to be top tier like OG Sub-Zero losing to the woman who’s struggled with Kano for her entire career. It’s not really a problem exclusive to Mr. Moobs. Personally, I think Kotal has potential to be an interesting and tragic character given proper direction, execution and consistent writing. The works. A once noble and just man who became tainted over the years due to wars, torture, ruling an empire where everyone’s trying to dethrone or assassinate him and trust is seriously hard to come by and before he knows it, he’s become no better than the tyrants that came before him. He’s not a bad concept or idea, they simply just fucked up with him like they did with so many others.
