"Sonic Team" is the name of one of the developers, so technically someone could add the tag Sonic_Team to other games they made like Nights_Into_Dreams and Phantasy_Star_Online. The series is mostly known as Sonic_the_Hedgehog so the series should be tagged as Sonic_the_Hedgehog_(series) so people don't use Sonic_Team as a developer tag."
I believe it is used as a catch-all for everything Sonic, including the Archie characters who were de-canonized when that artist guy fucked off. You are correct that Sonic Team does more than just Sonic and Nights, from what I can tell has the Sonic Team tag, but not the Phantasy Star games. This isn't a case like DC or Marvel, where the producer tag is used for the universe of characters that interact with each other. Since the games don't have anything to do with each other, aside from a one-off cameo here and there, the Sonic_Team tag may be on its way out. Something to do this week.
