AnonV3: Someone fucking explain the Flash hate! Please! He's a flat caricature of a 'cool high schooler' but so is Shindig Armoire pretty much. Is it waifuism? Is it because the autists want Twitwi to sit on their faces while they both solve Rubik's Cubes? Is it ... the suddenness? Because we can't introduce any important characters all of the sudden - barring Cheese Sandwich, Sunset Shimmer, Discord, Queen Chrssy, Braeburn, pretty much any fucking background character ...
Someone tell me, I want to know. I have literally zero issue with Flash. None. Nada. And because I have so little opinion on the guy, the hate just makes me so confused.
Voslar: @AnonV3: As you said, it's primarily because in a show of very well-developed, multi-dimensional, and very purposeful characters, Flash... exists. And that's all he does. He just kind of exists, and it's all the more glaring for just how much literally any other character in the entire series is more developed and interesting than he is.
He does nothing. He adds nothing. You could completely strip him out of every scene he's ever appeared in, and it would not affect the narrative in the slightest.
And yes, it's all the more grating that for some reason they gave Twilight a crush on such a non-entity.
Hierolocc: Waifuism is always a factor, but mostly what Voslar just said. He's arguably the most useless character in the whole repertoire.
The single plot significant thing he ever did to my knowledge was reminding Principal Luna what the the concept of photoshop is in the first film. In the second, he's a non entity.
Faptacular: Thing is if they had devoted time to developing him in the firdt movie people would've complained just as loudly about it being about him instead of Twilight and hated him anyway.
PinkBallons: @Faptacular: If they gave him enough personality to justify Twilight having a crush on him, I would have less of an issue with Flash. The fact that Twilight is suddenly interested in having a relationship when she enters high school world would still annoy me, however. It just feels forced.
Anonymous2: @AnonV3 nobody knew who shining armor was and the moment people knew about him it was clear that he is going to marry cadence
while flash just came out of nowhere and is after the main character of the series for no apparent reason
Voslar: Just for the record, I actually think Dragk draws amazingly, amazingly good human on pony. It's just that he seems to have a gift for picking the worst goddamn humans...
Hell the age thing is kinda weird regardless. I mean in Equestria Twi's pretty obviously in her mid twenties, goes through the portal and is back to fifteen. Makes Twi a bit of a hebephile.
Not that the EG timeline makes any sense anyway, Babs is a year older than AJ in the comics.
AnonV3: But Shindig Armoire is JUST as a blank nothing when he first shows up - he's worse in my opinion because he's some shithead surfer duuuuude and he's related to Twitwi instead of being a potential crush or whatever. And he doesn't get half the hate he deserves.
I actually really dislike Shindig and much more than Flash. Flash is a blah character, Shindig is unlikeable. And yet the hatred is heaped on the first and not the second.
Still, it seems to be a mixture of majority wiafuism with some concerns of his character thrown in. Seems silly to me I suppose. But that's mainly because Rarity is always best pony and Twitwi can have her non-person Flash whosit if she wants.
PinkBallons: @AnonV3: I've always found Shining (and Cadence, for that matter) to be ridiculous, especially in his introduction, but at least the writers developed his character a little and gave him purpose. Putting aside the fact that he is supposedly Twilight's "BBBFF" despite her never mentioning him once, he is believable as her brother in my opinion. All things considered, he falls into the neutral section of my love/hate scale.
You shoulda seen the shitfit we pitched right after the royal wedding. Trust me, we were bitching on all fucking cylinders. But they got better, I guess.
Voslar: @Faptacular: Age has always been a weird issue in MLP. Observe Granny Smith having founded Ponyville, and Twilight mentioning in Winter Wrap-Up that Ponyville was founded by earth ponies "hundreds of years ago." Easy enough to pass off as a random continuity error from back when they didn't care much about such things, but it's hardly the only incident.
What's particularly relevant here is Sunset Shimmer. Celestia's personal student before Twilight was, yet Twilight had never met her or heard of her before the events of EqG. Sunset Shimmer was strongly, strongly implied not to have run away from Celestia until she'd become a teenager, roughly on par with where Twilight was when the series started. For Twilight not to have known her or heard of her, EqG must've taken place a good decade out from Sunset Shimmer's flight from Equestria, probably more. Yet when she shows back up, she doesn't seem to have aged a day, either in Equestria or on Earth. So.... ponies are just REALLY long lived, I guess?
Faptacular: @Voslar: It gets a little odder in the comics again. A few panels before Sunset goes through the portal blankflank filly Twi is in the background.
Of course now we've also got the question of weather or not the sirens are all imortal too considerinfg Star Swirl banished them or if the human world is just stuck in some sort of time paradox.
Voslar: @Faptacular: For my own part, yeah, I totally consider it canon that the sirens are immortal, and it's my headcanon that they've been bumming around Earth for the past thousand years or so just generally wreaking low-level chaos and trying hard not to draw too much attention to themselves from those in power. It doesn't seem like much of a stretch, and it's actually kind of a cool idea.
Hierolocc: There might be something like that. The whole dimensional hopping shit changes the traveler's body to the norm of the world being entered, including also altering apparent age. Who knows what kind of weird time magic could be involved, might even perpetually keep them in the form they appeared in. Plus there's the stated fact that time moves differently between the worlds. If I remember correctly in fact, the day or two that encompassed the second EqG movie only constituted a few moments in the Pony reality.
AnonV3: @Hierolocc: Yeah, I was around for that and I'm still on the "Celestia and Luna are the ONLY alicorns" side of things. Seriously, fuck Cadence and fuck Twilicorn. Stupid toy makers.
They need to give Flash his own episode and paint him as the 'regular guy' that likes 'unspecified sport' and 'video game analogue' like they did with Shindig 'Surfer G' Armoire and we'll be fine I guess.
Voslar: @AnonV3: Shining is made a lot more palatable by virtue of the fact that he is essentially the face of the Equestrian military. Given the nature of the threats the Mane Six often face, I consider it a very good thing that they finally gave the military side of things some actual representation. Prior to his introduction, probably the single most popular type of OC pony in fanfiction was some sort of Royal Guard captain - just because you'd expect them to have SOME kinda presence in matters of national security.
They may not be too useful, but they're still an extremely important faction in the world of MLP. It's great that they get some face time via Shining.
AnonV3: @Voslar: No, I reject that 'face of the military' thing entirely. They did not need to make the RG CAPT. Twitwi's brother for shit's sake. They did that because, GASP, most brothers are presented as some sort of 'protector' to younger children - sisters especially. It was 'thematically apropos'.
Hierolocc: Again I'll side with you to a degree on that point. I may have been able to swallow the revelation if there had been ANY hint of Shining Armor's existence prior, much less a prestigious military career. It wouldn't have been an almighty stretch, the fact that Twilight grew up in Canterlot and was even considered for Celestia's school indicates her family was of some social standing, and it's not unheard of for the scions of such families to advance especially quickly through military ranks.
AnonV3: Well, I think the general hatred is perhaps the same reason I find myself feeling so neutral to him. He's kind, courteous and generally inoffensive - and nothing more. He's 'dreamy cutebottom' the boy every girl wants in some general way. He's a Mary Sue's love interest.
Problem is, Shindig is the same fucking way. Kind, courteous, generally inoffensive without a single specific character trait - bad or good - to his name that wasn't something the comics expounded on (and who reads that shit anyway?). Bleh.
... is this what feminists were going on about in their critiques of female characters? Because I wanted to laugh at them but now I'm having second thoughts.
Faptacular: @Hierolocc: This. A few lines of:
"Oh I got a letter from my older brother today"
"You have a brother?"
Yeah, He's in the Royal Guard. I haven't been able to see him much since I moved..."
would've made everyone go, Oh foreshadowing. Cool. And ended a lot of the complaints early.
Hell in Avatar Azula was shown in the background during Zuko's duel with Ozai with no explanation but that still set up her existence without ramming down the veiwer's throats.
@AnonV3: ...I read the comics. They're not bad. And the one where Shining and Cadence relate how they got together in high-school got out the backstory that should have been an episode prior to the wedding IMO.
AnonV3: @Faptacular: No. No they're not. They are way to 'present day' for something more intended for the older teen/adult fandom. Ogres and Oubliettes? Electric guitars? I mean, what's the point in having Twitwi be confused as sin about computers if ponies are half a step away from them - hell, with the feel of the comics, they ought to have at least an Apple II or Amiga equivalent.
Stupid gonzo-tech. Maybe I'm being a bit too picky - probably am - but I would have loved to see the comics embrace Faust's ideal of having Equestria be a medieval-era instead of the Bugs Bunny 'whatever works' era. Eh, for all that I guess they're not bad. Just disappointing. And only in one AUTISTIC WAY WHY DID I TYPE THIS FUCKING THING OUT OH MY GOD.
Faptacular: @AnonV3: *Points to Manehattan in the cartoon.* If anything the show's turn of the century.
Anyway I usually just figure stuff from the human world's been falling through holes in the barriers for years and the unicorns just find a way to recreate it magically once they figure out what it is.
AnonV3: @Faptacular: Turn of the last century. And honestly, I like that as head canon as well. But Faust wanted a more medieval feel for the world when she started. The pre-Great War era would be super interesting but that's jsut me.
Anonymous3: Shining Armor and his Princess wife are both pretty solidly Marty Stu / Mary Sue type characters that are extremely 'flat' in their designs, hence why a lot of people don't like them much. Also, they were just sprung into the series as you guys stated. Yep. Not a fan of them either.

I agree, but I still despise him, until they make him into a likable character...
Although, if I was him having Twilight rubbing my cock on her face would make me faint! O///O
Fuck you with a stun baton.
