Nothing against her, of course. I just feel that she's being forced into this simply because she's powerful, not because of who she is.
Voslar: You're right that she's not ready for it, but that's kind of a plot point. Besides, how does anyone truly 'get ready' for leadership? It's one of those things you can study all you want, but you won't know if you're really cut out for it or not until you try. Twilight herself isn't so sure about it, and her doubts only add to the development. Take her orders to the guards for example: As generic and open-ended as hell, but one hell of a job for someone who's never been in that position before. Twilight didn't know what she was doing, but she did NOT freeze - she gave instructions, clearly and calmly, and gave Canterlot something to do. Nothing is more devastating to morale than sitting around waiting in a disaster. People always cope better when they feel like they can take control of their fate in some way.
Is she suited for being a ruler? No - but she's getting closer every day. And besides, if she knew exactly what she was doing, it would hardly be very interesting to watch, would it? A huge part of why I enjoy this show is seeing the characters grow. They're awesome, yeah, but what's arguably even more awesome is watching them improve themselves as people. Twilight may rely on others, yeah, but that's hardly all she's ever done - she works her tail off to be as strong as she is, and I would argue that her friendships would be asset, not a liability. Through others, we gain perspective. Twilight's ability to empathize with others and willingness to listen to their thoughts and opinions, are not something to be underestimated.
As for her becoming an alicorn, I don't think it's that far-fetched Alicorns are the only type of rulers Equestria has ever known on any real scale, and have one hell of a good track record in general. They are living symbols of power, prestige, wisdom, and benevolence. Becoming an alicorn doesn't make you a good ruler, but it's a huge bonus when it comes to earning the trust of others. Celestia and Luna saw fit to raise Twilight to the rznk of demigoddess, and that's a pretty big endorsement. Not to mention that with as many enemies as Equestria has, it only makes sense to place power into the hooves of those you trust absolutely - even the Sisters can't do everything alone. It's a big responsibility, but as Celestia told Twilight, "You have proven that you're ready."
Maybe Twilight isn't up to this. But life doesn't come with guarantees. I put my faith in her. Not because I KNOW it will all work out, but because I choose to.

Alicorn Twilight fills me with a deep-seated rage unparalleled in all the seven realms, I have not watched an episode since, and reversing the toy executives' fucking stupid decision is right up there at #2 in my genie wish queue.

Personally, I think it was incredibly selfish of Celestia to put this on Twilight so soon, if we just look at it from the show's perspective. Yes, she's grown a lot since she first left for Ponyville, but she was nowhere near ready for being a princess. What if Celestia and Luna did die (Trapped for 1000 years, whatever) because of Discord's seeds? Twilight's entire life would be changed in an instant, and realistically, she would no longer have time for her old friends. Who's to say she would find ones that are looking out for her best interests in Canterlot?
As far as getting ready for leadership goes, it's really something that's learned through life experiences...Betrayal by someone close to her being a huge one Twilight really hasn't gone through yet. She has good instincts, yes, but that will only get you so far.
I honestly don't understand why people praise character growth in FiM when there really hasn't been any since Twilight in the season 1 premier. I love the characters dearly, and I enjoy seeing how they react to new obstacles, but at the start of every episode any previous lessons learned are tossed out the window.
I do believe that she should have become an alicorn eventually, but at the end of the final season after she's been taught all she could. It would be perfect; seeing Twilight in her new form would mark the end of a chapter in her life when she could do whatever she pleases in Ponyville with her friends. A new time filled with an ultimate responsibility, and I would be completely confident that she could handle it then. But not right now. It's completely out of place in my eyes.
