bAv-R34: So what, is that crystal thing some sort of a disease or something?
Not that Rarty would mind, although if she puts that shit on her dresses then the users will grow crystals as well, lowering their worth. At least Spike will have a fair reason to get Rari- oh wait, he's going to be like Crackle now. Oh well.
What if Crackle was actually this proud and respected dragon that contracted this Crystal disease? In happy ponies, it creates sad emo things, but in dragons, it drives them insane with greed, constantly plucking crystals off of the wretched thing's flesh, turning friend to enemy as he/she was no longer a dragon, but a source of wealth for a hoard.
Eventually, Crackle went mad from the pain and loneliness and lost his very mind, now little more than an animal. The other dragons, in a rare show of guilt, now keep the broken creature with them in an attempt to repent.
Buuut, I doubt that. I think Cracksy was just a special snowflake.

In that case, their benefit was immortality and immunity to other disease while they were hideously deformed and utterly psychotic.
