I tried it with a pencil (one of the ones where the non sharpened end is smooth and rounded) and while it felt good at the time, for the next few days I had a clear discharge that smelt really bad, and it was sore.

Use something really thick too.

A good tip: if you wouldn't rub it on your eye, don't stick it in your urethra.
