Anonymous5: actually in the version that aired in japan it was Shinke translating to evolution they just changed it to digivolution because when it reached the US the Porkyman tv show was on at the same time so as not to confuse people

the japanese term is just plain evolve, the american version added the "digi" to the beginning to make the term more childish as per their target audience. Target audience of Digimon in america: 5yrs. Target audience of Digimon in Japan: 13+
