I'm a republican and I love lesbians! You're thinking of christians. And they don't hate lesbians, they just don't think the government should change religious doctrine to get married. Government shall not infringe on religion. Christians have no problem with civil unions - which is the same exact thing.
As for Mass Effect, I think putting in lesbian relationships is a little juvenile in an otherwise great franchise. I'm sorry, but unless you're 12, who's going to really give a shit.
