You are evidently from the UK (or a country where the British monarch let you go) and say 'spelt', whereas we in the good ol' US of A declared our independence both politically and linguistically and say 'spelled'. We also dropped the 'u' from words like 'colour' and 'labour', thanks to Noah Webster.
